Grip Tape - Skateboarding Tricks

GripTapeTutor (Back Foot)

Our advanced section is meant to teach you how to have better control over your skateboard. These flip tricks are strategically ordered to benefit your learning curve. You should master the GripTapeTutor before attempting any of theses tricks. Order Now, then continue following our tutorials.

TRE-FLIP   PRESSURE FLIP    HARDFLIP    VARIAL HEEL FLIP • INWARD HEEL FLIP  •  FRONTSIDE FLIP  •  BACKSIDE FLIP FRONTSIDE HEEL FLIP  •  BACKSIDE HEEL FLIP FORWARD FLIP  •  IMPOSSIBLE   CASPER & HOSPITAL FLIPS

TRE-FLIP (360 KICK FLIP)

This move is a kick flip combined with a 180 shuvit and is similar to the varial flip. Your front foot should be placed like a kick flip and your back foot must scoop. Then, get your feet out of the way until you spot the grip tape.

In order to get that extra rotation, you have to hang your back toe off a bit. You will land primo if you do not flip enough. Additionally, the skateboard won't make it all the way around due to too much or not enough rotation.

PRESSURE FLIP

Place your feet in the varial flip position, but place the ball of your back foot on the edge of the back tail between the bolts where the board curves.

Push the ball of your foot down and in a scooping motion rather than popping it off the ground. You will notice the skateboard flipping like an inward heel flip.

HARDFLIP

This trick is a mix between the front side shuvit and front sidekick flip. Place your back heel off of the skateboard, with your front foot in the kick flip position.

Rather than scooping inward, your back foot has to push down, out, and forward while simultaneously doing a kick flip. Keep your shoulders straight and let the skateboard do the work.

 VARIAL HEEL FLIP

This is a mix of a heel flip and frontside shuvit. The board will rotate 180 degrees. Set your front foot up like a heel flip, only a bit more off the skateboard.

The heel of your back foot must be hanging off the skateboard, making the ball of that foot right on the edge that your back is facing. Just like the hardflip, you want to press down and scoop forward with the ball of your back foot.

As the front of the board begins to lift up, slide your front foot out in order to make the skateboard spin. Give it time to come around, and then stomp on the board with both feet at the same time.

INWARD HEEL FLIP

This trick is just like the varial heel flip, except your back foot scoops inward. The ball of your back foot must be near the back edge. Your front foot should be located in the same position as a heel flip.

Ollie, scoop backward, and then kick your front foot out like you would for a heel flip. Instead of going out and up and at an angle like for a heel flip, go straight out, perpendicular to the direction you are skating.

FRONTSIDE FLIP (180 KICK FLIP)

To perform this trick, you must know how to front side 180 ollie and kick flip. You need to have your front foot in the middle of the skateboard and at about a 30° angle.

The ball of your back foot needs to be at the edge that your back is facing. Once you are in mid air and at the height of your ollie, you should already be halfway through your 180. Right before this positioning, you'll want to kick your front foot out.

It is common to catch the board with your feet once your body has only turned 90 degrees and then spin the rest around with both feet on the skateboard. Be careful to keep them on or you may do the splits.

BACKSIDE FLIP (180 KICK FLIP)

This is similar to the frontside flip, except you are rotating in the opposite direction. Put your front foot in kick flip position and the ball of your back foot between the middle of the tail and the toe side edge.

Once you have ollied and are in mid-turn, you will notice that you are kicking your front foot forward and not out at a 45-degree angle like a normal kick flip. Pay attention to your shoulders and follow your skateboard.

It is normal to catch the board in mid-rotation and finish the rotation on the way down with your feet already on the grip tape. Be sure to turn your head.

FRONTSIDE HEEL FLIP (180 HEEL FLIP)

Set your feet up higher than a heel flip to stabilize the skateboard and wind up like a frontside 180. You will notice you kick your front foot in the direction that you were originally skating rather than out at a 45-degree angle.

Your back foot must be near the heel side edge and press down and out forward. Be sure to focus on the 180 rotation before you decide to kick your front foot out.

BACKSIDE HEEL FLIP (180 HEEL FLIP)

Set up your feet like you were doing a backside kick flip, but put your front foot perpendicular to the skateboard in the heel flip position.

Your back foot should be at the tip of the tail. When you press your back foot down, be sure to pull it back in the direction of your body rotation. Make sure you focus on the 180 before kicking your heel out.

FORWARD FLIP

This trick looks very cool, but it is very hard. Your front foot should be placed like an ollie, but towards the front trucks. You'll need to get enough air on your ollie in order for the skateboard to fold up and over itself.

Set your back foot in the middle of the tail, do an ollie, and then really throw your front foot over the front lip of your deck. Wait for it to come around and be sure not to do the splits.

IMPOSSIBLE

This is my favorite trick because the board wraps around you and sticks to your back foot. Your front foot needs to have its heel hanging off of the board and has to lead it in the right direction to quickly get out of the way.

Your back foot should have the toes hanging over the tail just a bit. Really scoop your back foot and once the skateboard begins to rotate, push it with your back foot by doing a little circle to keep the board sticking to your back foot.

It helps to lean toward your toes right before you ollie. The common mistake is landing on one foot with the skateboard behind you. Don't lean forward or backward; just stay directly over the board.

 CASPER & HOSPITAL FLIPS

Both tricks involve scissoring your feet and doing ½-Kick Flip.

Casper: flick the skateboard like you would in a kick flip, but once it is halfway around, smack the underside tail of the deck using the ball of your foot. This move will make the board 180.

Hospital: flick the skateboard like a kick flip and catch the grip tape with the top of your foot when it is halfway through the flip. Then, throw the board back and inwards toward your foot. If you can do both of these skateboard flip tricks, consider yourself an excelent skate boarder!
